Constitutional Committee - The Proposed Referendums

 CONSTITUTIONAL COMMITTEE

Earlier this week, the Constitutional Committee announced their proposed referendum on a number of issues. This referendum will be an AEC orientated vote, in which individuals will be offered a pamphlet and given the option to either vote yes or no. At this stage, no indication has been given as to if an individual votes yes or no on the entire list of proposed questions, or individually.

The 7 Questions that the Constitutional Committee has compiled thus far are:

1. A preamble be inserted recognising Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders as the First Australians;
2. The Head of State, currently the Lord Protector, be renamed to King of Australia
3. The Head of State be AnthonyJAbbott at the commencement of these Amendments;
4. The Head of State’s representative, the Governor-General, be allowed to assume the responsibilities of the Senate in extreme circumstances;
5. The Parliamentary Term be extended to 3 months for the House of Representatives and 6 months for the Senate;
6. The Parliament be granted the right to legislate on issues pertaining to Defence, and;
7. The Parliament be granted the right to legislate on the size of both chambers of Parliament.

No political parties thus far have announced their support for any of the questions, whether it be a yes or no campaign. Political activity altogether has been halted as the Christmas season approaches and due to the delayed swearing in of the Prime Minister and his cabinet.

An ANN Correspondent interviewed Constitutional Convention member tony regarding the referendum. He displayed his eagerness to have the referendum occur in the new year, and further encouraged individuals to support the yes campaign across all 7 amendments for "Simpler politics and government structure, and much needed revitalisation in our community". He further stated that he would prefer the votes be done as one large yes or no, for all 7 amendments, however has contemplated splittng it to each individual question.
